"Of One"
“Of One” is a collection that explores the complexities of self-identity and cultural heritage through the traditional craft of jade carving. Growing up away from China, I was exposed to a multitude of cultures that shaped my understanding of individuality and belonging, often in conflict with my traditional upbringing. This collection is an attempt to reconcile these influences, to create objects to adorn the body that not only represent my and many other’s cultural roots while expressing our unique identities in a contemporary manner.
Jade carving holds a significant place in Chinese culture. By studying this ancient craft, I aim to challenge and reinterpret the traditional norms associated with it. I studied with a jade carving master, focusing on two intricate techniques: chain carving and “devil’s work ball” carving. These methods involve “releasing” movable elements from the confinements of the stone. Symbolizing the transition from solidity to fluidity and reflecting my own transformation from a rigid cultural identity to a more fluid, multicultural self.
“Of One” predominantly features “non-precious” jades, which are often overlooked due to their lack of vibrant color and transparency. These stones are typically used for the inexpensive mass production of tourist trinkets and are quickly discarded. By applying time-consuming and highly technical techniques, I wish to elevate these undervalued materials, challenging traditional perceptions of jade’s worth and encouraging a reevaluation of what is considered valuable
Through “Of One,” I seek to bridge the history of my culture with contemporary expression, inviting viewers to experience the dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity, and the continuous evolution of identity.

“Tina’s jade pieces capture a fascination with the act of release, a transcendent moment where boundaries blur and the constraints of the stone dissolve into fluidity and motion. By using techniques such as chain carving and “Devil’s Work Ball”, Tina illustrates this act of release while only using a single piece of jade for each item. The process represents vulnerability and strength; it requires courage to surrender, as one small mistake can damage the integrity of the work. However, it is through this act of letting go that the true artistic vision is achieved.”
